Functionally, ''[[Rhythm Heaven]]''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s {{Nihongo|Cafe|キッサ店|Kissa-ten}} and ''[[Rhythm Heaven Fever]]''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s {{Nihongo|Café|キッサ店|Kissa-ten}} are almost identical. It is unlocked in the former game after clearing [[Built to Scale (DS)|Built to Scale]] and is found on the blue line in the Game Select, while in the latter, it is unlocked after [[Hole in One]] and found in [[The Medal Corner]]. Here, the player is given various options:
*{{Nihongo|Talk to Barista|マスターとはなす|Master to Kenasu}}: This initiates a conversation with [[Barista]], who once again remains offscreen, talks about various topics, usually about the player's progress, and can allow them to skip a [[Rhythm Game]] they are stuck on. Starting with ''[[Rhythm Heaven]]'', the Café's button on the Game Select shows the [[Barista]]'s face to notify the player that he wants to talk to them about something. In ''[[Rhythm Heaven Fever]]'', players who are stuck on a game also have the option to view a demonstration of the game in question.
*{{Nihongo|Listen to Music|音楽をきく|Ongaku o Kiku}}: Here the player can access the [[Music Corner]] unlocked through the [[Perfect Campaign]].
*{{Nihongo|Read Something|読みモノをよむ|Yomi Mono o Yomu}}: Here the player can access the [[Reading Material]] unlocked through the [[Perfect Campaign]].
*{{Nihongo|Practice Flicking|はじく練習をする|Hajiku Renshū o Suru}}/{{Nihongo|Rhythm Test|リズム感チェック|Rhythm-kan Check}}: This option allows the player to replay the respective [[Introduction]]s in each game.
While ''[[Rhythm Tengoku]]'' also allows the player to [[Studio|listen to music]], [[Rhythm Shiryo Shitsu|read something]] and [[Rhythm-kan Check|try the rhythm test again]], these options are found in the [[Rhythm Tengoku#Menu|Menu]]. In later games, the Menu was replaced with a File Select, and these options were rolled into the Café instead.

Additionally, the Café appears as a location in ''[[Rhythm Tengoku Gold Comic]]'' [[Rhythm Tengoku Gold Comic#04 “ワン”ス アポン ア タイムの巻き ("On"ce Upon a Time by Maki)|04 “ワン”ス アポン ア タイムの巻き]] ("On"ce Upon a Time by Maki), where the [[Dog]] is seen sitting at the Cafe at the end, and in [[Rhythm Tengoku Gold Comic#09 にぎやかでおだやかな夜の巻き (A lively and peaceful night by Maki)|09 にぎやかでおだやかな夜の巻き]] (A lively and peaceful night by Maki), where a player is seen leaving the Cafe at the beginning. In ''[[Rhythm Heaven Megamix]]'', the {{Nihongo|Café|キッサ|Kissa}} is unlocked after [[Fillbots]], and can be accessed by tapping on the round button on the bottom left of the Touch Screen on the overworld map. Initially, the place is pretty barren, with more features being unlocked as the game progresses:
*{{Nihongo|Talk to Barista|マスターと話す|Master to Hanasu}}/{{Nihongo|Talk to Customer|お客さんと話す|Ogyakusan to Hanasu}}: The [[Barista]] appears in the middle of the store, and can be talked to at any time. After clearing each land, the respective characters met there may appear and can be talked to instead. Notably, the [[Barista]] can no longer help the player skip games they are having trouble with--this is now handled by [[Rupert]], who also [[Coins|charges]] the player for this service.
*{{Nihongo|To Museum|ミュージアムへ|Myūjiamu e}}: The [[Museum]] is an area where the player can view their progress on each [[Rhythm Game]] thus far, and can use it as a quick way to play the games themselves. After clearing [[Mamarin Palace]], the player can access the {{Nihongo|Slide Shows|スライドショー|Suraido Shō}}.
*{{Nihongo|Shop|ショップ|Shoppu}}: To the right is a [[Shop]] run by [[Saffron]], which opens after the player clears [[The First Gate]]. Here, the player can purchase [[Rhythm Item]]s, [[Play Music|Music]] and [[Rhythm Games]] for use in the [[Museum]]. The former two essentially fulfill the same purpose as the [[Reading Material]] and [[Music Corner]] from previous games.
*{{Nihongo|Talk to Curator|受付と話す|Uketsuke to Hanasu}}: After clearing [[Shoot-'em-up]], [[Saltwater]] gets hired as the [[Museum]] curator. The player can talk to him to access the {{Nihongo|[[Badges]]|記念バッジ|Kinen Badge}}, {{Nihongo|[[Mascots]]|マスコット|Masukotto}}, and {{Nihongo|[[Memories]]|おもいで|Omoide}} submenus.
*{{Nihongo|StreetPass Terrace|すれちがい テラス|Surechigai Terrace}}: Found on the far left, this area allows the player to play [[Figure Fighter VS]] after they have cleared [[Airboarder]].
*{{Nihongo|Stable<ref name="ManualUS">''[[Rhythm Heaven Megamix]]'' Manual (English)</ref>|ヤギ小屋<ref name="ManualJP">''[[Rhythm Tengoku: The Best+]]'' [https://www.nintendo.co.jp/data/software/manual/manual_bpjj.pdf Manual (Japanese)]</ref>|Yagi Koya}}: Also known as the {{Nihongo|Goat Stable}}<ref name="ManualUK">''[[Rhythm Paradise Megamix]]'' [https://cdn02.nintendo-europe.com/media/downloads/games_8/emanuals/nintendo_3ds_2/rhythmparadisemegamix/ElectronicManual_Nintendo3DS_RhythmParadiseMegamix_EN.pdf Manual (UK English)]</ref> in ''[[Rhythm Paradise Megamix]]'', this is unlocked after clearing [[The Second Gate]]. In front of the stable is a box where [[Hair Vegetables|turnips]] grow, which are used to {{Nihongo|Feed Goat|エサをあげる|Esa o ageru}}. After clearing [[Lush Tower]], the player can use [[Coins]] to feed [[The Goat]] as well.
*On the Touch Screen, the player has access to the {{Nihongo|Settings|せってい|Settei}}. Here they can change the {{Nihongo|Control Guide|操作方法|Sōsa hōhō}} between {{Nihongo|Buttons|ボタン|Botan}} and {{Nihongo|Simple Tap|かんたんタッチ|Kanta n Tatchi}}, toggle the {{Nihongo|StreetPass|すれちがい通信|Surechigai Tsūshin}}, {{Nihongo|Sending Play Data|プレイ内容の送信|Play Naiyō no Sōshin}}, and {{Nihongo|[[Timing Display]]|タイミング表示|Timing Hyōji}} settings on or off, {{Nihongo|Play [[Intro]]|手ほどきで あそぶ|Tehodoki de Asobu}}, and {{Nihongo|Return to Title|タイトルに もどる|Title ni Modoru}}. While not much is known about what is served at the Café as a business in-universe, some dialogues mention specific products:
*Fitting for a Café, the [[Barista]] serves primarily coffee<ref>"How are you feeling? If you try to focus on a game for too long, it can really wear you out. Try to take a break every now and then. Oh, coffee's on the house. See you around." ~ [[Dog]], ''[[Rhythm Heaven]]''</ref>, with known variants being bitter, mild<ref>"How do you like your coffee, bitter or mild? ...And did you always like it that way? When I was young, I didn't like anything bitter. I wonder why I prefer bitter coffee now...? Oh, the milk's over there. Help yourself to however much you want. See you around." ~ [[Barista]], ''[[Rhythm Heaven Fever]]''</ref>, black, and with milk and sugar or cream<ref>"Hello there! Do you like your coffee black or with milk and sugar? I remember being shocked by how bitter it was when I first tried black coffee. I thought milk and sugar were necessary for my survival! But once I got used to it, I began to understand the flavor. Well-brewed coffee has many mysteries. It's important to explore them in turn. Anyway, room for cream for you today?" ~ [[Barista]], ''[[Rhythm Heaven Megamix]]''</ref>. The [[Barista]] also tries to provide fresh milk for the coffee through raising a [[The Goat|goat]]<ref>"Hello there! Sorry, but I have a small favor to ask. Where to start...? So I was thinking that it'd be nice to have fresh milk for the coffee here, right? ...And, long story short, there's a goat living here now. Yes. A {{color|#E40000|goat}}. So far, though, she hasn't produced any milk, even though she's always eating. Right. The favor I was going to ask: Will you help me raise my {{color|#E40000|goat}}? I don't know if she'll ever actually produce milk, but... I feel like feeding her can only lead to good things. So, what do you think? It won't take much of your time. And it's fun to feed her. You can feed her the turnips from the garden next to the stable. Feel free to pick 'em all. They grow back real quick. Please...please take good care of my baby!" ~ [[Barista]], ''[[Rhythm Heaven Megamix]]''</ref>.
*[[Boondog]], who supports the [[Barista]]'s dog-owned business, mentions they serve tea, and provide honey for it<ref>"Bzzzark--I mean hello! This Café is my favorite place to relax. I like to support dog-owned bzzznesses, and the owner provides honey for the tea. I hope you like it as much as I do. Make yourself at hive!" ~ [[Boondog]], ''[[Rhythm Heaven Megamix]]''</ref>.
*[[Shep]] mentions that the coffee beans used at the Café are harvested in [[Citrus Land]], which gives a hint of orange in the aroma<ref>"Do you know about the coffee beans they use here? They're harvested in Citrus Land. True story! That's why there's just a hint of orange in the aroma. I think that's why this place is so popular." ~ [[Shep]], ''[[Rhythm Heaven Megamix]]''</ref>.
*[[Trey]] mentions they serve cinnamon coffee, which helps him relax<ref>"Coffee makes a lot of folks tense. Not me--it's relaxing. Especially the cinnamon coffee they have here. The smell reminds me of my uncle. He's a cinnamon tree." ~ [[Trey]], ''[[Rhythm Heaven Megamix]]''</ref>.

*In ''[[Rhythm Tengoku]]'', the [[Dog]] appears to have a girl employed as a waitress, with two customers also visible at the Cafe. This girl does a gesture when the player chooses to skip a game. These people are not seen at the Cafe in ''[[Rhythm Heaven]]'' and ''[[Rhythm Heaven Fever]]'', though the [[Barista]]'s dialogue implies there are still customers coming in. In ''[[Rhythm Heaven Megamix]]'', completing a land allows the character that the player and [[Tibby]] met there to occasionally appear as a customer, meanwhile [[Saffron]] and [[Saltwater]] of the [[Gatekeeper Trio]] end up working at the Café as the [[Shop]]keeper and [[museum]] [[curator]], respectively.
*In the Cafe in ''[[Rhythm Heaven]]'', there is a framed photo of what looks like the [[Dog]] with glasses.
*In the Cafe in ''[[Rhythm Heaven]]'', one can see the boombox and table with letters which are seen in the [[Reading Material (Rhythm Heaven)|Reading]] and [[Music Corner]]s. There is also a guitar which is not seen anywhere, although there is an unused sprite for a menu corresponding to it.
*The icon used in the [[Endless Games]] menu for [[Glass Tappers]], as well as the general atmosphere during the game, imply it takes places in the Cafe.
*In ''[[Rhythm Heaven]]'', the [[Dog]] states that the Cafe has been open for three years<ref>"And, of course, I've got my cafe. Open three years, and still going strong, thanks to my regulars." ~ Dog, ''[[Rhythm Paradise]]''</ref>.
**While no concrete time frame is given for ''[[Rhythm Heaven Fever]]'' and ''[[Rhythm Heaven Megamix]]'', the [[Barista]] talks about his experience with a guitar in both games, which is described as having happened "recently" in relation to the former, and "a long time ago" in relation to the latter.

The trailer itself implies she may have worked there at one point.
*In ''[[Rhythm Heaven Megamix]]'', there is a framed picture between the [[Shop]] and the [[Museum]]. This picture is randomized each visit from a selection of 20 images.
*While playing the [[Stable]] minigame, the background changes every few level ups. One of them depicts the Café.
*The Café makes a brief cameo in ''[[mariowiki:WarioWare Gold|WarioWare Gold]]'', where if the player inputs Phone Code 22 (CAFE) into [[mariowiki:List of souvenirs in WarioWare Gold#Phones|Phone]] souvenir the [[Barista]] responds. He talks with the player over the phone, and mentions a story about the [[Ashley]] doll placed on the [[Museum]] [[Saltwater|Curator]]'s desk, which caused an increase in customers<ref>"Hello? Oh, yes, we're open today. Just started brewing a fresh pot of coffee. Coming to our café soon? Um, you live in Diamond City? Well, if you can't get here, I'll yip on with you for a bit over the horn. Let's see... Oh, I've got an Ashley story, believe it or not. We put an Ashley doll in our café, and ever since then, we've had a lot more customers coming in than usual. Can't help thinking there's some hocus-pocus behind it all. But if you find any other Ashley stuff, I'd be interested. Oh, sorry to yip on so long there. Have a great day." ~ Phone Code 22, ''[[mariowiki:WarioWare Gold|WarioWare Gold]]''</ref>.

The Café (キッサ店?, Kissa-Ten), also known as Kissa Councel (喫茶カウンセル?, Café Councel) in Rhythm Tengoku, is a reccurring location in the Rhythm Heaven Series. Usually accessed through the Medal Corner, the player can come here to talk to Barista or partake in other activities.

Description

Rhythm Tengoku

Kissa Councel as it appears in Rhythm Tengoku

In Rhythm Tengoku, Kissa Councel (喫茶カウンセル?, Café Councel) is unlocked after clearing Remix 1, and can be accessed in the Medal Corner. Entering it initiates a conversation with the Barista, who remains offscreen. He talks about various topics, usually regarding the player's progress in the game. The Barista can also allow the player to skip a Rhythm Game if they get three Try Again ranks in a row. Doing so effectively gives the player an OK rank on that game, clearing it, and allowing them to continue.

Although Kissa Councel does not appear in the arcade version, the opening piece of the music for it was repurposed for the ending screen if the player loses all hearts and does not continue the game.

The Café as it appears in Rhythm Heaven Fever

Functionally, Rhythm Heaven's Cafe (キッサ店?, Kissa-ten) and Rhythm Heaven Fever's Café (キッサ店?, Kissa-ten) are almost identical. It is unlocked in the former game after clearing Built to Scale and is found on the blue line in the Game Select, while in the latter, it is unlocked after Hole in One and found in The Medal Corner. Here, the player is given various options:

  • Talk to Barista (マスターとはなす?, Master to Kenasu): This initiates a conversation with Barista, who once again remains offscreen, talks about various topics, usually about the player's progress, and can allow them to skip a Rhythm Game they are stuck on. Starting with Rhythm Heaven, the Café's button on the Game Select shows the Barista's face to notify the player that he wants to talk to them about something. In Rhythm Heaven Fever, players who are stuck on a game also have the option to view a demonstration of the game in question.
  • Listen to Music (音楽をきく?, Ongaku o Kiku): Here the player can access the Music Corner unlocked through the Perfect Campaign.
  • Read Something (読みモノをよむ?, Yomi Mono o Yomu): Here the player can access the Reading Material unlocked through the Perfect Campaign.
  • Practice Flicking (はじく練習をする?, Hajiku Renshū o Suru)/Rhythm Test (リズム感チェック?, Rhythm-kan Check): This option allows the player to replay the respective Introductions in each game.

While Rhythm Tengoku also allows the player to listen to music, read something and try the rhythm test again, these options are found in the Menu. In later games, the Menu was replaced with a File Select, and these options were rolled into the Café instead.

Additionally, the Café appears as a location in Rhythm Tengoku Gold Comic 04 “ワン”ス アポン ア タイムの巻き ("On"ce Upon a Time by Maki), where the Dog is seen sitting at the Cafe at the end, and in 09 にぎやかでおだやかな夜の巻き (A lively and peaceful night by Maki), where a player is seen leaving the Cafe at the beginning. It appears again at the end of Night Walk in Rhythm Heaven Fever.

Rhythm Heaven Megamix

The Café as it appears in Rhythm Heaven Megamix

In Rhythm Heaven Megamix, the Café (キッサ?, Kissa) is unlocked after Fillbots, and can be accessed by tapping on the round button on the bottom left of the Touch Screen on the overworld map. Initially, the place is pretty barren, with more features being unlocked as the game progresses:

  • Talk to Barista (マスターと話す?, Master to Hanasu)/Talk to Customer (お客さんと話す?, Ogyakusan to Hanasu): The Barista appears in the middle of the store, and can be talked to at any time. After clearing each land, the respective characters met there may appear and can be talked to instead. Notably, the Barista can no longer help the player skip games they are having trouble with--this is now handled by Rupert, who also charges the player for this service.
  • To Museum (ミュージアムへ?, Myūjiamu e): The Museum is an area where the player can view their progress on each Rhythm Game thus far, and can use it as a quick way to play the games themselves. After clearing Mamarin Palace, the player can access the Slide Shows (スライドショー?, Suraido Shō).
  • Shop (ショップ?, Shoppu): To the right is a Shop run by Saffron, which opens after the player clears The First Gate. Here, the player can purchase Rhythm Items, Music and Rhythm Games for use in the Museum. The former two essentially fulfill the same purpose as the Reading Material and Music Corner from previous games.
  • Talk to Curator (受付と話す?, Uketsuke to Hanasu): After clearing Shoot-'em-up, Saltwater gets hired as the Museum curator. The player can talk to him to access the Badges (記念バッジ?, Kinen Badge), Mascots (マスコット?, Masukotto), and Memories (おもいで?, Omoide) submenus.
  • StreetPass Terrace (すれちがい テラス?, Surechigai Terrace): Found on the far left, this area allows the player to play Figure Fighter VS after they have cleared Airboarder.
  • Stable[1] (ヤギ小屋[2]?, Yagi Koya): Also known as the Goat Stable[3] in Rhythm Paradise Megamix, this is unlocked after clearing The Second Gate. In front of the stable is a box where turnips grow, which are used to Feed Goat (エサをあげる?, Esa o ageru). After clearing Lush Tower, the player can use Coins to feed The Goat as well.
  • On the Touch Screen, the player has access to the Settings (せってい?, Settei). Here they can change the Control Guide (操作方法?, Sōsa hōhō) between Buttons (ボタン?, Botan) and Simple Tap (かんたんタッチ?, Kanta n Tatchi), toggle the StreetPass (すれちがい通信?, Surechigai Tsūshin), Sending Play Data (プレイ内容の送信?, Play Naiyō no Sōshin), and Timing Display (タイミング表示?, Timing Hyōji) settings on or off, Play Intro (手ほどきで あそぶ?, Tehodoki de Asobu), and Return to Title (タイトルに もどる?, Title ni Modoru). To the left and right of the Settings submenu are buttons for the Manual (説明書?, Setsumeisho) and, in the international versions, one to toggle the voices between Japanese and the native language the game is set to.

In Rhythm Tengoku The Best Plus Comic 01 同窓会 (Reunion), the Barista greets various characters to the Café, until the Martian appears, with Barista being confused who they are before they leave. In 02 火星人再襲来 (Martian Reinvasion), the Martian returns a few days after the reunion, and gets too close for comfort as Barista tries to welcome them to Rhythm Heaven. In 10ヤギとマスター (The Goat and Barista), Saffron sells The Goat to the Barista for real cheap, saying her milk is delicious. The goat begins to chow down on turnips, causing the Barista to worry, as she hasn't produced milk, and is only eating every day. He worries that the goat is only getting bigger, and might not fit in the Café soon. He thinks about changing the way he raises the goat as a customer comes in. In 12おかねもちになったら (When you get Rich), the Barista sees Saffron is sad, and asks him what's wrong. Saffron says he'd like to get money. After being asked what he would do if he got rich, Saffron starts thinking about things like buying Paprika new goggles, traveling, how he doesn't like Saltwater and other things, but refuses to actually say anything. In 17テビリとマスター (Tibby and Barista), as Tibby shares a peach with Barista, he asks him how old he is.

Services

While not much is known about what is served at the Café as a business in-universe, some dialogues mention specific products:

  • Fitting for a Café, the Barista serves primarily coffee[4], with known variants being bitter, mild[5], black, and with milk and sugar or cream[6]. The Barista also tries to provide fresh milk for the coffee through raising a goat[7].
  • Boondog, who supports the Barista's dog-owned business, mentions they serve tea, and provide honey for it[8].
  • Shep mentions that the coffee beans used at the Café are harvested in Citrus Land, which gives a hint of orange in the aroma[9].
  • Trey mentions they serve cinnamon coffee, which helps him relax[10].

    • While no concrete time frame is given for Rhythm Heaven Fever and Rhythm Heaven Megamix, the Barista talks about his experience with a guitar in both games, which is described as having happened "recently" in relation to the former, and "a long time ago" in relation to the latter.
  • The Café as it appears in Rhythm Heaven Fever makes a quick appearance in Mona's Character Trailer for WarioWare Gold[12]. The trailer itself implies she may have worked there at one point.
  • In Rhythm Heaven Megamix, there is a framed picture between the Shop and the Museum. This picture is randomized each visit from a selection of 20 images.
  • While playing the Stable minigame, the background changes every few level ups. One of them depicts the Café.
  • The Café makes a brief cameo in WarioWare Gold, where if the player inputs Phone Code 22 (CAFE) into Phone souvenir the Barista responds. He talks with the player over the phone, and mentions a story about the Ashley doll placed on the Museum Curator's desk, which caused an increase in customers[13].

  4. "How are you feeling? If you try to focus on a game for too long, it can really wear you out. Try to take a break every now and then. Oh, coffee's on the house. See you around." ~ Dog, Rhythm Heaven
  5. "How do you like your coffee, bitter or mild? ...And did you always like it that way? When I was young, I didn't like anything bitter. I wonder why I prefer bitter coffee now...? Oh, the milk's over there. Help yourself to however much you want. See you around." ~ Barista, Rhythm Heaven Fever
  6. "Hello there! Anyway, room for cream for you today?" ~ Barista, Rhythm Heaven Megamix
  7. "Hello there! Sorry, but I have a small favor to ask. Where to start...? So I was thinking that it'd be nice to have fresh milk for the coffee here, right? ...And, long story short, there's a goat living here now. Yes. A goat. So far, though, she hasn't produced any milk, even though she's always eating. Right. The favor I was going to ask: Will you help me raise my goat? I don't know if she'll ever actually produce milk, but... I feel like feeding her can only lead to good things. So, what do you think? It won't take much of your time. And it's fun to feed her. You can feed her the turnips from the garden next to the stable. Feel free to pick 'em all. They grow back real quick. Please...please take good care of my baby!" ~ Barista, Rhythm Heaven Megamix
  8. "Bzzzark--I mean hello! This Café is my favorite place to relax. I like to support dog-owned bzzznesses, and the owner provides honey for the tea. I hope you like it as much as I do. Make yourself at hive!" ~ Boondog, Rhythm Heaven Megamix
  9. "Do you know about the coffee beans they use here? They're harvested in Citrus Land. True story! That's why there's just a hint of orange in the aroma. I think that's why this place is so popular." ~ Shep, Rhythm Heaven Megamix
  10. "Coffee makes a lot of folks tense. Not me--it's relaxing. Especially the cinnamon coffee they have here. The smell reminds me of my uncle. He's a cinnamon tree." ~ Trey, Rhythm Heaven Megamix
  11. "And, of course, I've got my cafe. Open three years, and still going strong, thanks to my regulars." ~ Dog, Rhythm Paradise

  13. "Hello? Oh, yes, we're open today. Just started brewing a fresh pot of coffee. Coming to our café soon? Um, you live in Diamond City? Well, if you can't get here, I'll yip on with you for a bit over the horn. Let's see... Oh, I've got an Ashley story, believe it or not. We put an Ashley doll in our café, and ever since then, we've had a lot more customers coming in than usual. Can't help thinking there's some hocus-pocus behind it all. But if you find any other Ashley stuff, I'd be interested. Oh, sorry to yip on so long there. Have a great day." ~ Phone Code 22, WarioWare Gold
