Shep (クッキン?, Kukkin) is a character encountered in Citrus Land and Citrus Tower in Rhythm Heaven Megamix.
Description
Shep is a self-proclaimed chef, who works at the one restaurant in Citrus Land[1]. He values his late mentor greatly[2], and sometimes recites quotes from him.
Story
Shep mentions some tidbits about his childhood while at the Café. Shep was a really short as a kid, and would always get picked last for the basketball team. He got a sudden growth spurt, and was then started getting picked second to last[3]. He was a troublemaker in his youth, but then met a master chef, who became his mentor[4]. His motivation to become a chef was to make people happy through cooking[5]. At some point before Citrus Land lost its flow, Shep's mentor passed away[2].
After Tibby and the player pass the Gatekeeper Trio's trials at The First Gate, they gain entry to Citrus Land. Here they meet Shep, who cannot open his restaurant due to a lack of ingredients[6]. To help restore his kitchen, the player and Tibby must clear four Rhythm Games, and by doing so gathering food and restoring the flow[7]. After getting the All Clear, Shep remembers he doesn't actually know how to cook, and reveals he's actually just the food-inventory guy[8].
After Citrus Land has been cleared, Shep may visit the Café as a customer, where the player can talk to him. He mentions that the coffee beans used at the Café are harvested in Citrus Land, which gives a hint of orange in the aroma[9]. Shep is very forgetful when he first wakes up, and drinks coffee at the Café to help himself wake up[10]. After the incident in Citrus Land, he started training to become a real chef, and finds the terminology used in recipes to be confusing[11]. He believes that love and flow are the most important things in cooking[12]. Shep reveals that although he can't cook, he actually can make donuts[13]. He invites the player to visit the restuarant sometime[1], and he shares a conversation he had with an old fisherman in the market, and hopes they catch the biggest fish, which he hopes to sell at the restaurant[14]. One day, Eglantine paid a visit to the restaurant in Citrus Land. She was frustrated at Shep for not being able to cook, yet still carrying a pan. When asked about it, he says it was a gift from his mentor, and so he must always carry it. She was still hungry, and in the end ate his hat[15].
Later on, after Tibby and the player clear Lush Tower, Tibby tries to use its power to return to Heaven World, but it is not enough. Trey informs him that they need a rainbow of power for that, after which the six towers appear, one of them being Citrus Tower. Here, the player and Tibby encounter Shep once again, who tells them that his tribe's restuarant at the tower had gone out of business ages ago, and he and his mentor had always dreamt of restoring it. To do so, the player and Tibby need to clear the five Rhythm Games within, restoring the flow as well[16]. Upon doing so, Shep awakens the tower's secret power, which helps create the rainbow needed to reach Heaven World[17].
Shep appears in Rhythm Tengoku The Best Plus Comic. In Give it to me!, Shep is getting ready to cook. He looks for ingredients, mistaking Trey for broccoli and Hairold for red bell pepper, but ultimately deciding neither is good for his cooking. He notices Eglantine carrying an egg, and he decides to cook it. He asks her to give him the egg, but she refuses, saying a birdy will hatch, and she's keeping it warm. He says he'll keep it warm in the frying pan, but she says the birdy will never hatch this way. Shep assures her that he'll crack the egg before cooking it, prompting Eglantine to threaten him. In Rhythm Tengoku The Best Plus Comic 34こんにちは！ヘビッピです！ その4 (Hello! I'm Rupert! Part 4), Rupert introduces himself to Shep, who in turn seems happy to have found someone shorter than him. As he goes on about him being "short and cute", Rupert stretches his neck, making himself taller. As Shep regains his composure, Rupert returns to normal. A now more worried Shep says that he hopes Rupert will grow up as soon as possible. In Rhythm Tengoku The Best Plus Comic 36ムラサキの女の人 (Purple Woman), Rupert asks Shep if he has seen a woman with an egg. The orange spheroid responds with frustration, saying he tried to get an egg from a purple woman, but she suddenly stared at him with her evil eyes, which traumatized him. Rupert recognizes that he met the same purple woman before. As Shep and Rupert wonder why the purple woman is so evil, Eglantine herself, along with Hairold, are wondering what the other two are talking about.
