Dieter (プルタ?, Puruta) is a character encountered in Machine Land and Machine Tower in Rhythm Heaven Megamix.
Description
Dieter appears to be a man with a car on his head. He owns a garage[1] in Machine Land where he appears to offer a car repair service[2]. He uses a lot of car-related puns when he speaks. He is self-concious about his age[3], and does not like being called "sir"[4].
Story
Dieter mentions a few details about his childhood while visiting him at the Café. He has a younger sister, with whom he used to scrap a lot as kids[5]. His love for cars began when he was little, when his uncle would take them out for drives in the country[6].
After Tibby and the player help Boondog in Honeybee Land, they move onto Machine Land. There they meet Dieter, who is unable to get his engine started, and thus can't fix other people's cars in his garage. In order to restore the traffic flow, they must clear four Rhythm Games. After clearing the first game, Dieter's tools are restored, with which he claims can fix anything, even a bad flow[7]. After clearing them, Dieter is able to work again, and unlocks the door to The First Gate.
After Machine Land has been cleared, Dieter may visit the Café as a customer, where the player can talk to him. He mentions that on his time off, he likes to drive in his car. On one occasion, he went out to see the cherry blossoms in bloom[8]. He wishes to drive all around the world, but has yet to figure out how to cross the oceans[9]. He shares an embarrassing story of having to call a mechanic to fix his broken car out in the desert, as he had left his own tools at home[10]. He talks about his impressions of Eglantine[11], and a story about finding a frog on the roof of his car[12]. He mentions a story of when his sister visited him recently, and fixed up an old car he had been putting off fixing. He was proud of her, until she took the last of the cookies he had baked[5]. He takes any excuse to drive to new places, and he likes taking the scenic route[13]. He once went to the Cool-Car Show, and wishes to drive a car as cool as the ones displayed there[14]. He picked up Boondog as a hitchhiker on one occasion, and was given 12 pounds of honey as thanks, although he is not sure what to do with it[15]. Hairold mentions in one of his conversations about his impressions on Dieter wearing a car on his head, which he at first mistook for him being run over[16].
Later on, after Tibby and the player clear Lush Tower, Tibby tries to use its power to return to Heaven World, but it is not enough. Trey informs him that they need a rainbow of power for that, after which the six towers appear, one of them being Machine Tower. Here, the player and Tibby encounter Dieter once again, who tells them that his ancient tribe of gearheads has been taking care of the tower for a long time, but it has gotten rusty recently, and as such it has lost its flow. To restore it, the player and Tibby need to clear the five Rhythm Games within[17]. Upon doing so, Dieter awakens the tower's secret power, which helps create the rainbow needed to reach Heaven World[18].
Dieter appears in Rhythm Tengoku The Best Plus Comic 16がけっぷちの恋 (The Cliff of Love), where he is seen selling a car to Mr. Chicken.
