Tap Dance (Unused Sequence) |
Early Builds
Director and Chief Programmer Kazuyoshi Osawa drew the original concept art for Tap Dance. Chief Designer Ko Takeuchi, who was initially confused by it, would later draw the graphics for the characters based on the specifications, without knowing what kind of game it would be. Despite initial skepticism, he was very satisfied with the result[1]. The concept art itself appears to match what made it into the final game with only a few minor differences, such as the Girl's dress being longer and segmented in the middle (resembling how it looks in the Remix 7 version of the game) and the Monkeys being very simple stick figures, incidentally resembling Play-Yan, though it is unknown if this was simply a placeholder design. The specifications also suggest that doing two taps would have the trio step with their right foot, the same as doing one tap. They do double taps by stepping with their left foot in the final game.
Unused Content
Version 06 of Tap Dance does not have any graphics specifically made for it; instead it randomly selects one of the other versions when loaded[2][better source needed]. It is used in an unused sequence of Tap Dance, which is mostly the same as the final version, but has extra patterns in the middle, and curiously uses the jingle at the end of Karateka's music. For some reason, the voice cue for the triple tap is also cut short[3][better source needed]. It cannot be accessed through Sequence Test. Version 05, though not assigned anywhere in the game, acts identically to version 06.
In the Remix 7 version of the game (the one with Buta-san) the girl's dress has two layers to it, with the upper layer obscuring what looks to be shorts.
Every version of Tap Dance in Rhythm Tengoku has animations for every move in the game, but not all of them are used.
Every version of Tap Dance in Rhythm Tengoku has sprites for the Giraffe, most of which go unused. The Giraffe is replaced with a dragon in the Remix 7/Remix 8 version of the game, and a camel in Super Tap. Remix 5 is the only version to not have any sprites for the Giraffe.

Miscellaneous
In Rhythm Tengoku (Arcade), the outline of the platform in the second section of Tap Dance in Remix 8, as well as in Dance Lesson 1, is miscolored magenta. This error is not present in the GBA version of Rhythm Tengoku.

There is a placeholer background sprite, being a simple green rectangle. A second such sprite exists with the Girl, Monkeys and Giraffe, likely as a layout test.
In the spritesheet of the game, are the sprites of the heads of the Monkey used in Hole in One, likely used as a reference when making the sprites of the monkeys on this game.

Unused Content
The placeholer background sprites from Rhythm Heaven Fever also exist in Rhythm Heaven Megamix.
Tap Trial 2 contains a remade version of the Camel from the original replacing the Giraffe, still unused. Interestingly, the camel's legs can be seen on the prologue to Tap Trial 2 in Rhythm Heaven Megamix, replacing the giraffe's. Songbird Remix on the other hand has a slightly different version of the Giraffe's sprite.
Miscellaneous
In the Wario...Where? version of Tap Trial, Ashley makes a generic miss sound when failing on a jump, unlike the Girl who has unique voice clips.

(Director and Chief Programmer Osawa wrote the specifications for "Tap Dance", and I honestly thought, "What is this?" (laughs).
But anyway, I followed the instructions and made the graphics for the characters, but I still didn't know what kind of game it would be, and I wondered if it would be fun. I was skeptical.
But when the game was finished, I was convinced. And when I added Tsunku♂'s music to it, I realised that it would be fun! I was keenly aware that it was interesting.
It wasn't just interesting, it was a game with a feeling I'd never played before. That's why "Tap Dance" is a rhythm game that I have a strong emotional attachment to.) ~ Ko Takeuchi, ほぼ日刊イトイ新聞 - 樹の上の秘密基地。 (Hobo Nikkan Itoi Shinbun - A secret base on a tree.) - ↑ Random Tap Trial
