"This resident of Songbird Land, Eglantine, has a bit of dark side. Can you make Songbird Land great again?" |
Eglantine (エグラン?, Eglan) is a character encountered in Songbird Land and Songbird Tower in Rhythm Heaven Megamix.
Description
Eglantine appears as a young woman with blonde hair and rosy cheeks in a purple cloak, who is usually seen holding an egg. When her dark side comes out, her face darkens and her eyes glow green, creating a more sinister look. She can sometimes be found singing.
At first, Eglantine appears as a calm individual. She isn't always nice as she seems, as she tends to get into her dark side whenever she is angry, which is represented through text in all caps. Her dark side tends to frighten other people, and she usually apologizes for it[1], however she also uses her dark side to threaten others into doing what she wants[2]. She does not enjoy being disturbed by other people[3].
Story
After Tibby and the player help Hairold in Barbershop Land, they move on to Songbird Land. Here they meet Eglantine, who is trying to hatch an egg. She tries singing to it, but to no avail[4]. She explains she has tried all sorts of methods, from sitting on the egg, to singing to it, gently knocking, shaking, and methods she describes as "unsavory and unnatural", all of which fail, which makes her frustrated[5]. She realizes that the bird may not be coming out because of the lack of flow in Songbird Land[6], and so asks Tibby and the player to help her restore it, for which they must clear four Rhythm Games. After clearing them, the egg hatches, and Eglantine is horrified to find the bird inside is large and not particularly cute[7]. The sight of it reminds her that she got into witchcraft out of a sense of wonder,[8] and unlocks the door to The Third Gate. She claims that because of Tibby's kindness and generosity, she is inspired to be a better, less monstrous person[9]. Despite her nicer tone, Tibby is still afraid of her.
After Songbird Land has been cleared, Eglantine may visit the Café as a customer, where the player can talk to her. She says the coffee helps her forget all the bad things in her life, and wonders what her bird is doing at that moment[10]. She can sometimes be caught singing to herself while drinking coffee, and asking to be left alone[11]. She talks about the tribe that lives in the Lush Woods, saying their heads look like a comfortable place for birds to live[12]. She wonders if the word "egg" would be better if it had an extra e at the end to make it a palindrome, as she believes palindromes are better[13]. She compliments the player for raising The Goat, and says it is easier for her to raise her birds, as she quietly stares at them when they misbehave[14]. She mentions an occurance where scary-looking people with creepy voices sometimes talk to her as if they know her, and she doesn't understand why they are interested in her. She also notes she's not old enough to be referred to as "ma'am"[15]. Sometimes, the player may catch her yelling at one of her birds, and she is too angry to talk[16]. She mentions one time where she was trying to hatch an egg, before realizing it was an unfertalized one she had hard-boiled the day before[17]. She sometimes wonders what it would be like if people could fly through the air like birds, and has apparently not heard of airplanes prior to this conversation[18]. One day, Eglantine paid a visit to the restaurant in Citrus Land. She was frustrated at Shep for not being able to cook, yet still carrying a pan. When asked about it, he says it was a gift from his mentor, and so he must always carry it. She was still hungry, and in the end ate his hat[19].
Later on, after Tibby and the player clear Lush Tower, Tibby tries to use its power to return to Heaven World, but it is not enough. Trey informs him that they need a rainbow of power for that, after which the six towers appear, one of them being Songbird Tower. Here, the player and Tibby encounter Eglantine once again, who tells them that her ancestors had been living in harmony with the birds in the tower, but as the tower has lost its flow, the birds eventually all left. To get them to come back, the player and Tibby need to clear the five Rhythm Games within[20]. Upon doing so, Eglantine awakens the tower's secret power, which helps create the rainbow needed to reach Heaven World[21].
Eglantine appears in Rhythm Tengoku The Best Plus Comic. In 14こんにちは!ヘビッピです! その2 (Hello! I'm Rupert! Part 2), Rupert walks about and sees Eglantine. She asks him what kind of creature he is, as he says he likes to listen in on people. She then gives him her scary look, and Rupert leaves. In Give it to me!, Shep is getting ready to cook, and notices Eglantine carrying an egg. He decides to cook it, and asks her to give him the egg, but she refuses, saying a birdy will hatch, and she's keeping it warm. He says he'll keep it warm in the frying pan, but she says the birdy will never hatch this way. Shep assures her that he'll crack the egg before cooking it, prompting her to threaten him. In 36ムラサキの女の人 (Purple Woman), Rupert asks Shep if he has seen a woman with an egg. The orange spheroid responds with frustration, saying he tried to get an egg from a purple woman, but she suddenly stared at him with her evil eyes, which traumatized him. Rupert recognizes that he met the same purple woman before. As Shep and Rupert wonder why the purple woman is so evil, Eglantine herself, along with Hairold, are wondering what the other two are talking about.

Trivia
- In most versions, Eglantine lets her dark side get the better of her a lot of the time, but she has several pieces of dialogue (particularly in the Café) where she remains calm all throughout. In the French version of Rhythm Paradise Megamix, her dark side appears a lot more often, and she appears to be much angrier, unlike other versions where her dark side may also represent a loud, threatening or demonic tone without necessarily being angry[22].
