Karate Man Senior (カラテ家の父?, Karateka no Chichi) is the 4th Rhythm Game of Tibby's Mom (89th overall) in Rhythm Heaven Megamix.

Despite its name and placement, this is not an arrangement of any other Karate Man game.

Gameplay

In this game, the player is in the place of Karate Joe's Father. This game includes every single function from previous Karate Man games. As objects fly by the character, the player must press A to punch them off-screen. On occasion, a lightbulb will be thrown and start glowing yellow indicating that a barrel containing a bomb will be thrown next. After punching the barrel open, the bomb must then be kicked away by releasing the A button at the same time. There is also a combo, which will appear when a light-bulb appears and start glowing blue instead of yellow. Directly after the light-bulb will follow with several pots and then a barrel, which the player will have to hit with a flurry of punches and kicks.

This game is shown to be more ambitious than any of the other previous Karate Man games, with many more pots to punch and kicks and combos to do.

Timing Display

  • Perfect!/Ace!: Karate Joe's father punches the assorted objects away. For a barrel, he punches it and kicks the bomb in it far away into the background. And with a combo, he punches everything away and smashes the barrel, looking happy.
  • Early!/Late!: Karate Joe's father just grazes the objects, making them fall to the ground. For a barrel, the barrel is broken but the bomb is only kicked a bit into the background. With a combo, he only hits some of the objects (either some pots if too early or late, or the barrel if not finished correctly), looking sad afterward.
  • Miss...: Karate Joe's father completely misses or doesn't punch, and the objects fly past, with him looking surprised. For a barrel, it either flies right by him, or is punched, but the bomb is not kicked and falls to the ground. With a combo, he either lets all the objects fly by, or messes up and spins out after the move is done.

Your punching technique was...different.
I didn't think anybody kicked like that...
Your combos aren't so keen...

Eh. Passable.

Wow, those punches!
Nobody kicks like you!
You're the king of combos!

My father's most amazing trait is probably his vision. He can tell the color of a training light bulb in an instant and counter it. Will I ever be so quick?

Skill Star

Kick the 8th bomb perfectly to collect the star. The Skill Star appears on the 8th barrel in the latter half of the game.

Appearances

Trivia

  • Karate Joe rates his father's performance, while usually it's "the Master" who rates Joe's performance. Karate Joe also comments on his father's performance in the epilogues, being visible in the "Try Again" one.
  • Karate Joe's father's clothes are all black with a grey highlight during the game, but appear more like dark grey in other art.
    • Additionally, some sprites contail coloring errors, such as his belt being black instead of red in one of the "strong punch" animation frames, and the black part of his pants appears grey in one spot on one of the frames of the animation for missing a combo. These appear to be the artist not paying enough attention to the details while recoloring Joe's sprites for this minigame.
  • While doing "Punch, kick!", the player can knock away the barrel by press B for a combo, which interestingly doesn't break the barrel.
  • The epilogues for the game reference those of other Karate Man games in Rhythm Heaven Megamix: The Try Again epilogue looks similar to the one from Karate Man Combos! with both feeling weak while being in a featureless colored background, the OK epilogue in similar to the one from Karate Man Kicks! with both characters sitting down and eating, and the Superb epilogue looks similar to the one from Karate Man Returns! with both characters dashing in the air while striking the same pose.
  • This game is notable for being grouped with other arrange version games, despite not being an arrange version of any game. It could be seen as an arrangement of all previous Karate Man games rather than any one in particular.
