The Lumbercats (マキネコ?, Makineko) are characters who request the help of Woodcutter Bear[1] (マキグマさん[2]?, Makiguma-san) with chopping firewood that appear in LumBEARjack in Rhythm Heaven Megamix.

Story

The Lumbercats request the help of Woodcutter Bear to chop their wood for them. They provide wood for him to chop, as well as cans, baseball bats, brooms, and a refrigerator to top it all off. In LumBEARjack, they are seen chopping wood during the warmer time of the year, while in LumBEARjack 2, they continue chopping even more firewood into the winter. In Barbershop Remix, they are seen chopping wood outside of the barbershop, still in winter. Here, the Lumbercats wear familiar-looking afros while Woodcutter Bear sports a fancy bowtie. In Final Remix, they make the bear chop a giant peach with a child Lumbercat inside.

Woodcutter Bear wears clothes three times his size because his muscles get really big whenever he flexes[1]. The cats wear their tank tops all year long, hence why they need so much firewood. Woodcutter Bear has yet to decide if he should tell them about coats[3].

A lone Lumbercat appears in Rhythm Tengoku The Best Plus Comic 29発声練習 (Vocalization Practice), who sees a Chorus Kid practice singing, while three Lumbercats appear in the comic Turf War. Here, The Kitties try to get the Lumbercats to leave their turf, who instead simply stare back at them. The Lumbercats analize all the Kitties' features, such as their lack of whiskers and clothes, different ears, and the presence of fingers. This causes the Kitties to run off in fear, while the Lumbercats think about how cute they are when they run. A group of Lumbercats appears in the comic レスラーとファン (Wrestler and Fans) as well, where they are seen taking a picture with the Wrestler.

Trivia

  • The Lumbercats are heavily implied to be attracted to Woodcutter Bear. It can be inferred that they purposefully create a situation in which they need firewood specifically to have the bear come over so they can admire him.
  • While the information given in the Rhythm Items is generally consistent across languages, some details are changed. For example, in Rhythm Tengoku: The Best+, the German version of Rhythm Paradise, and Rhythm Sesang: The Best+, it is stated that Woodcutter Bear larger clothes because he used to be quite fat, but lost weight from chopping wood, and needs suspenders to keep his pants up[2][4][5]. In other versions, it it instead stated that he needs clothes three times his size because pf his muscles getting so big when he flexes[1][6][7][8].
    • Additionally, Rhythm Tengoku: The Best+ and Rhythm Sesang: The Best+ state that the Lumbercats are surprisingly unaware that there are long-sleeved clothes as well[9][10]. The French version of Rhythm Paradise Megamix specifies that Woodcutter Bear is the neighbor of the Lumbercats[11][12]. The German and Italian versions states the bear wonders if he should tell the cats about jackets instead[13][14]. The Spanish version meanwhile specifies there are coats in the closet rather than talking about them generally[15].
