    Story

Play-Yan is known for his love of music, and his previous works are all about it. Through connections, he was able to appear in Rhythm Tengoku as well. In his private life, he likes to listen to music and taking walks while watching the night sky. He doesn't like to talk about his work too much, but he is always cheerful and has a gentle way with words[1]. The speaker of Night Walk Information happened to meet Play-Yan in the city, who promptly said "I love music!" and disappeared up some stairs. He has an impeccable sense of rhythm and Magic Flowers grow in his footsteps when the timing is right[2][3].

During Night Walk, every time Play-Yan successfully makes a flower grow or other object appear, one of the stars in the background grows. If all of the stars are at their max size at the end of the game, the final box releases a small star which Play-Yan grabs on to. In the OK and Superb epilogues, Play-Yan is seen making friends with the stars. In Night Walk 2, Play-Yan must avoid Biribiriuo, which float above specific boxes. If he jumps from a box with one right over it, he'll get shocked by the fish and fall down.

The stars show up in The Dazzles with a yellow appearance, appearing when the player poses correctly during key moments in the song. In The Dazzles 2, the stars turn into sheep at their max size. Play-Yan may appear hanging on one of the stars or sheep, which is acknowledged in Supporting Cast 2, referring to him as a Hidden Character (かくれキャラ?, Kakure Kyara). Play-Yan also appears as an astronaut in the epilogue to Remix 9 in Rhythm Heaven, where he is either in deep-space trouble being chased by Space Umpires (Try Again), cruising the stars in style (OK), or making first contact fun with the Space-Rabbits (Superb). Play-Yan appears along with a star in the sky in Rhythm Tengoku Gold Comic 09 にぎやかでおだやかな夜の巻き (A lively and peaceful night by Maki). Play-Yan appears in Remix 7 in Rhythm Heaven Fever, as one of the images in the Cheer Readers sections. Play-Yan appears riding on a star during the "To Heaven World" Memory in Rhythm Heaven Megamix.

    Trivia

    WarioDIY-SpeedupE.png
    • Play-Yan is named after the Play-Yan, a media player that would allow a Game Boy Advance or a Game Boy Micro to play MP3s and videos via an SD card. He appeared as the main mascot on the selection menu, as well as being playable in a minigame called JUMP. Biribiriuo first appeared in that minigame, where Play-Yan has to duck under the fish as they pass by.
    • Play-Yan appears as a visualization in the Nintendo 3DS Sound application, specifically the MP3 Player. He is shown jumping on boxes to the beat, with the music being portrayed as blue stars fading in and out in the background.
    • In WarioWare: D.I.Y., very similar stars appear during "Speed Up" sections.
    • The Stars themselves do not appear in Rhythm Heaven Fever's rendition of Night Walk, instead simple stars appear after each successful jump. Similar looking stars do however appear in Launch Party.
    • There are unused sprites of Biribiribuo in Rhythm Heaven Megamix.
