Appearance and Personality

The Martian is a green octopus- or jellyfish-like creature with five tentacles. As with similar aliens seen in Japanese media, its design resembles those of the aliens from the novel The War of the Worlds.

The Martian is almost always seen with a big smile on its face, and appears to be very friendly, as it is friends with both Translator Tom and Farmer Bob as seen in the OK and Superb epilogue screens. Its message to Earth is also very friendly in tone. The Martian does have a more cheeky/mischievous side, as it jokes about pork rice bowls in its message, and pretends to not understand Tibby in a comic when asked about a pork rice bowl it promised him.[1]

History

Sometime before the events of First Contact, human astronauts landed on Mars, and left behind pork rice bowls. These became very popular with Martians, who plan open a restaurant serving them in the future.

Shortly before Translator Tom landed on Mars, the researchers of the mission decided to brainstorm ideas of what Martian life might look like. Some researchers suggest robotic or humanoid designs that intrigue the others, while another draws a jellyfish-like creature. The group laughs off this idea as unrealistic, and are later speechless to see that the real Martian closely resembled that design.[2]

During First Contact, Translator Tom helps the Martian deliver its friendly message to the people of Earth. After this, the Martian is welcomed to Earth. Sometime following this, Earth and Mars have established a culinary exchange program.

It is unknown whether the Martian in Second Contact is the same individual, as a Martian spacecraft is seen in the field, suggesting it may have recently landed.

Trivia

  • The strange voice when you miss is the pitched-up voice of the Wrestler from Ringside posing.
  • There's a martian that can be found in Game & Wario that looks very similar to towards this martian by its basic shape.
    • Even more similar aliens appear in the epilogue screens of Spaceball.
  • The Martian has some sort of device called a telemopathic lingualyzer, allowing its messages to be accurately translated as long as the translator has good rhythm.
  • According to an official comic, the Martian eventually masters Earthling language.[3]
