Theory on explanation of the name
So judging by the wording on the page (i.e., "seemingly") it appears I'm not the only one who realizes that the player character is glaringly canine rather than ursine as the title would imply. I have a few other observations that I would like to present, and the conclusion I've drawn from them.
1. The cats are very, uh, "friendly". And they seem to frequently and heavily compliment the player on his being "big", "strong", and "handsome"
2. "Neko" is, in addition to being the Japanese word for cat, also a Japanese slang term for a submissive gay male.
3. "Bear" is also a very popular term for a large, hairy, typically strong gay male.
4. The lumberjack aesthetic is frequently adopted by bears.
Conclusion: The player character is a wolf, but is also a bear, in the sense of a gay bear.
