Mr. Upbeat is an Endless Game featured in both Rhythm Tengoku and non-Japanese versions of Rhythm Heaven Fever.
==Rhythm Tengoku == | |||
Mr. Upbeat is the first endless game you unlock, needing only one Medal.
The game is very simple; you are playing as a small stick figure, Mr. Upbeat, in a blank area. As the game starts, a pendulum will start to swing at you, going back and forth. To dodge the pendulum, the player need to make Mr. Upbeat "step" as the pendulum nears his feet. Successful stepping will make Mr. Upbeat step over the pendulum as it goes towards him. A light on Mr. Upbeat's head will flash green to help the player time it right, and the pendulum will make a "click" cue when it starts moving in the other direction.
Every 16 successful steps, the game will temporarily stop the pendulum. During this time, the player will get a point, but when the pendulum starts moving again, it will be going at a different tempo (which Mr. Upbeat's light will be flashing to show the speed of). The game keeps going until Mr. Upbeat fails to step over the pendulum, which will knock him over. The game gives you no extra chances, so one mess-up will end the game.

Mr. Upbeat, in one of the many references back to Rhythm Tengoku, gets his game remade for this game, unlocked as the first endless game for three medals. Notably, it does not actually appear in the original Japanese release of the game. In all other releases of the game, it replaces Manzai Birds, due to the translators finding it difficult to localize such a speech-heavy and cultural-reliant game.
The core gameplay of the original game is maintained for the remake, but there are a few changes. For one, rather than for every 16 steps, one successful steps counts as a point. Also instead of after every 16 beats, the tempo of the pendulum will change every 32 steps.
Every tempo change, Mr. Upbeat will say something to you. At first, he is congratulating you for doing well, but as the game gets faster, he starts wondering how you're able to do this. Eventually, he starts begging you to stop for the sake of his aching feet. As per the original game, the game will stop once you mess up.
Once you get to 130 points (and every so often after that), Mr. Upbeat's light will grow over the next few steps, display a series of letters, and then go back to normal. The letters that pop up spell MATCH, which can be inserted into the Police Call Rhythm Toy.
Mr. Upbeat also has parts in the Endless Remix, replacing the Manzai Birds parts from the Japanese version.

===Read Something=== | |||
Mr. Upbeat gets a "Read Something" Gift you can look at in the Café. It is the 22nd gift in there, entitled "A Musical Term". It is unlocked by perfecting Karate Man 2.
The reading material starts with Mr. Upbeat himself apparently talking to a therapist about his problems. He states that his name doesn't actually reflect his personality. He thinks that "Mr. Upbeat" makes people think that he should be a happy person, when he's actually usually depressed. He then apologizes to his therapist for having to come in every week to discuss this, and asks him if he ever has problems like this. The only response is an "Oookii oook-ook!" sound that normally comes from a Monkey Watch, suggesting that Mr. Upbeat is using it to help console himself. After that, Mr. Upbeat decides to end the session, stating to "turn in next week for another session of 'Mr. Upbeat's complaints'.
