Rhythm Datsumo was originally going to be about pulling out hairs off an old man's head, with the graphics using a photo of a development staff member's face. To express the complex psychology of it feeling good to pull out hairs cleanly despite it hurting, the game was given an Arabian-style theme. Later on, as the idea of pulling hairs off the head "wasn't suitable for everyone", it was changed to the beard instead. Towards the end of development, the developers found the realistic face to be a little too gross<ref>"At first it wasn't an onion, but a person's face. Version 00, 01 and 02 all use the same graphics, but start off with a different vegetable. Version 03, 04 and 05 follow the same pattern, with the alternate color palette used in Rhythm Datsumo 2. While the first three all get used in Remix 8, the last two are never used in the game.
