In Tap Troupe, the player controls one of four Tall Tappers. The tappers' legs occupy most of the screen, while their faces are seen in the bottom left. The player must maintain a steady beat with the rest of the tappers, pressing A on every beat. At certain parts of the game, a voice off-screen will say "Rea-dy!" and the player must shift their rhythm to a 4:3 polymeter, with button presses now being on a dotted eighth note rhythm. The player must continue this rhythm until a voice saying "Tap, tap, tap!" prompts the player to return to a steady four on the floor rhythm. The final "tap" will always be on the next available beat in the original groove, regardless of where the previous two land, meaning the distance between the second and third tap will occasionally be shorter or longer. If the player successfully executes the alternate rhythm, the Tall Tappers will shout "OK!", and periodically fire off party poppers or raise "OK" hand symbols as distractions.

At certain parts of the game, a voice says "Rea-dy!" indicating a rhythm change. The player must shift to a 4:3 polymeter rhythm. This continues until the voice says "Tap, tap, tap!", signaling the rhythm is going to change back. *Perfect!/Ace!: The Tall Tappers continue their routine. After the female voice's complex tap cues, the Tall Tappers will gleefully yell out "Okay!". Additionally, halfway through the game the Tall Tapper on the left of the group will bring out a confetti popper which launches confetti. During the last few moments of the rhythm game, the Tall Tappers will wave their arms up with their hands in an OK sign.

*Early!/Late!: A small 'tick' sound is heard when tapping off beat. The other Tall Tappers will glare at the player's Tall Tapper, annoyed. During practice, the Tall Tappers will glance over at the player.
|Ace!=The player taps in time with the others. When changing back to the regular rhythm, the player taps extra hard, and the Tall Tappers gleefully say "OK!". Halfway through the game, the tapper on the left also brings out a confetti popper, and a little after tappers wave their arms up with their hands in an OK sign.
*Miss...: The other Tall Tappers will blow a raspberry and make an embarrassed face at the player's Tall Tapper. During practice, the Tall Tappers will glance over at the player.
|Early!/Late!=The player taps off the beat, making a "tick" sound. The others glare at the player. During Practice, they glance over instead.
|Miss...=The player taps at the wrong time or doesn't tap at all. The others blow a raspberry and make an embarrassed face at the player. During Practice, they glance over instead.}}

*The Tall Tappers' box-headed, human-like appearance makes them resemble the Space Dancers and The Paddlers from previous games. The troupe's leader is also implied to be Space Gramps, furthering the connection.

*The Tall Tappers' box-headed, human-like appearance makes them look similar to the Paddlers from Rhythm Tengoku 's Space Dance and Rhythm Heaven’s Rhythm Rally.
**In the reading material you receive by perfecting this game, the troupe's leader is implied to be Space Gramps, further making the connection between them.
*The game's basic play style, with four characters stepping to a beat, makes it similar to Rhythm Tengoku’s Marching Orders.
*There are unused sprites of Tap Troupe found in the game’s files, but it looks like it’s in the DS’ graphical format. Some fans theorized that Tap Troupe was originally supposed to appear in Rhythm Heaven.
**In addition, there’s also an unused sprite of a Tall Tapper with his hands on his hips. Oddly enough, he doesn’t have gloves on.
*The "Rea-dy!" audio cue is later repurposed in Rhythm Heaven Megamix for Lockstep in Right-Hand Remix, Flock Step in Final Remix and Tangotronic 3000 for the finishing pose.
