The player takes control of The Wandering Samurai. He must defeat red-eyed monsters spawning from a dark portal, using Samurai Technique I: The Slice. Occasionally, a group of green-eyed monsters appear all at once, which the samurai must dispatch with Samurai Technique II: Lots of Slicing, also known as a whirlwind slice. The red-eyed monsters vary in size, however this does not affect gameplay itself.

Gameplay
During practice, The Wandering Samurai can be found in what appears to be a bamboo forest, slicing monsters popping out of a burning straw house. After this, a single monster carrying a pinwheel appears, prompting the samurai to give chase. In the real game, the samurai moves into position, as the words "A Hero's Tale" (or "Samurai Slice" in Beat the Beat: Rhythm Paradise) set the scene.

In this game, the player controls the wandering samurai. He must slice demons who are spawning from a dark portal, in order to save the lost pinwheel of a child. These Evil spirits will appear and the player must slice them with their sword at the correct time to vanquish them, by pressing the A button. Occasionally, a vortex of demons will swarm at once and the player has to perform a whirlwind slice, which will make the samurai thrash his sword rapidly.

You use the normal slice for the red demons, but the green ones come out faster, so you have to use the whirlwind slice. The Red demons can also vary in size, but this is just a distraction. There is also a story, which covers the screen mid-game to obstruct the game's visuals.

Gameplay Features
Our Story So Far...
Various elements during the story segment can be affected negatively if the player's timing is off. When a barely occurs, the characters and texts will tilt slightly. When a miss occurs, the characters and text tilt drastically, reaching the edges of the screen. During the evil spirit's story segment, additional spirits alongside it appear if either a barely or miss occurs.

Wandering Samurai Dialogue
At the end of the story segment during the rhythm game, the Wandering Samurai will either say "I will see justice done." or "Don't worry."

To Be Continued...
At the end of the rhythm game, the words "To be continued..." appear. If the player slices at them four to five times, the words will be cut in half.

During the first wave of monsters, snow starts falling, followed by sakura leaves. The game then covers the screen to show the story so far, showing the Pinwheel Girl and her friend playing with a pinwheel, which a monster swoops in and steals. The samurai appears before them, and proceeds to chase the monsters to see justice done. After this, a storm appears as the game nears the end. The very last monster is the one carrying the pinwheel. After it, the text "To be continued..." appears on screen, which the samurai can slice if he so chooses.

*Perfect!/Ace!: The samurai slices the evil spirit in two. When facing a horde of spirits, they are easily cut up by his whirlwind slice.

*Early!/Late!: The samurai's blade grazes the evil spirit and it flies away. When facing a horde of spirits, the samurai cuts them up as normal but will not shout at the very end.
|Ace!=The player slices the monsters in half. Interestingly, the end of a whirlwind slice is counted as a perfect input even though the player does not need to release the button at the right time.
*Miss...: The evil spirit attacks the samurai and knocks him over. When facing a horde, any missed spirits will latch onto the samurai and bite him.
|Early!/Late!=The player grazes the monster, making it fly away. When facing a group of monsters, the first one is grazed, and the samurai does not yell at the end.

|Miss...=The monster strikes the player, knocking them over. Any missed monsters in a group latch onto the samurai and bite him.}}

Trivia
*In the Korean version of Rhythm Heaven Fever, the three characters featured in this rhythm game have their traditional Japanese clothing altered to resemble Korean traditional clothing, called "Hanbok".
*In the US English version of Rhythm Heaven Fever, the child in blue clothing is referred to as Pinwheel Boy. All other versions either refer to them as a girl or simply a child.
**Also, in the Superb epilogue screen, the colors of the background were changed from red and yellow to blue and cyan, to cover up the Rising Sun colors.
*
In Rhythm World Wii, the characters featured in this game have their traditional Japanese clothing altered to resemble Korean traditional clothing, called "Hanbok". Interestingly, The Wandering Samurai's appearance is different from that of the Samurai Slice in Rhythm World.
**Additionally, in the Superb epilogue, the colors of the background were changed from red and yellow to blue and cyan.

*In Rhythm Heaven Megamix, the fog that appears along the bottom of the screen is oddly missing.
*In Rhythm Heaven Megamix, the fog that appears along the bottom of the screen is oddly missing.
*This is the only minigame from the Samurai Slice series that returns in Megamix. The ones minigames that didn't return are Iai Giri and the DS/Endless version of Samurai Slice.
*Although Samurai Slice 2 is not featured in Rhythm Heaven Megamix, the "To be continued..." line at the end is kept, implying the story actually continues in Super Samurai Slice.
*Due to the "To be continued..." line being kept, despite the sequel being unplayable, it is possible that this version of Samurai Slice is the prequel of Super Samurai Slice in Megamix.
*In Rhythm Heaven Fever, the child in blue clothing is referred to as Pinwheel Boy in the rating notes screen. In Megamix, his name was changed to Pinwheel Girl. This was also reflected in European version of Fever.
*In Megamix, letting go of the B button after a whirlwind slice will always indicate a perfect hit. Due to this, the Skill Star can almost always be collected.
*After practice, a demon holding a pinwheel appears. This will let the player know when the game is about to start.
