| Mr. Upbeat (ウラおとこ ura Otoko "backwards boy") is an Endless Game featured in both Rhythm Tengoku and non-Japanese versions of Rhythm Heaven Fever. | | In Rhythm Tengoku, it is unlocked when the player has one Medal and has cleared Remix 1. In Rhythm Heaven Fever, it is unlocked when the player has three Medals. |
| | ==Description== |
| | As the game starts, a voice will count off a rhythm for eight beats. After this, a pendulum will begin to swing at the player. To dodge the pendulum, the player need to make Mr. Upbeat "step" as the pendulum nears his feet. To assist the player, the light on Mr. Upbeat's head will flash on each correct beat. |
| | |
| | Every 16 successful steps, the pendulum will temporarily stop. During this time, the player will receive one point, and a new tempo will be counted. |
| | ===Rhythm Heaven Fever=== |
| | The game remains mostly the same. However, there are minor differences with scoring, and other added features. |
|
| |
|
| ==Rhythm Tengoku ==
| | The most notable change is in the scoring: the player receives one point for every step rather than every set. In addition, the beat will restart every 32 steps, not every 16. |
| Mr. Upbeat is the first endless game you unlock, needing only one Medal.
| |
|
| |
|
| The game is very simple; you are playing as a small stick figure, Mr. Upbeat, in a blank area. As the game starts, a pendulum will start to swing at you, going back and forth. To dodge the pendulum, the player need to make Mr. Upbeat "step" as the pendulum nears his feet. Successful stepping will make Mr. Upbeat step over the pendulum as it goes towards him. A light on Mr. Upbeat's head will flash green to help the player time it right, and the pendulum will make a "click" cue when it starts moving in the other direction.
| | Every tempo change, Mr. Upbeat will say something to you. At first, he is congratulating you for doing well, but as the game gets faster, he starts wondering how you're able to do this. Eventually, he starts begging you to stop for the sake of his aching feet. |
|
| |
|
| Every 16 successful steps, the game will temporarily stop the pendulum. During this time, the player will get a point, but when the pendulum starts moving again, it will be going at a different tempo (which Mr. Upbeat's light will be flashing to show the speed of). The game keeps going until Mr. Upbeat fails to step over the pendulum, which will knock him over. The game gives you no extra chances, so one mess-up will end the game.
| | Mr. Upbeat also appears in the Endless Remix. |

| ==Rhythm Heaven Fever== | | *Barely: N/A |
| Mr. Upbeat, in one of the many references back to Rhythm Tengoku, gets his game remade for this game, unlocked as the first endless game for three medals. Notably, it does not actually appear in the original Japanese release of the game. In all non-Japanese releases of the game, it replaces Manzai Birds, due to the translators finding it difficult to localize such a speech-heavy and cultural-reliant game. | | *Miss: Mr. Upbeat will let out a cry and land on his rear end. One miss ends the game. |
| | | ==Controls== |
| The core gameplay of the original game is maintained for the remake, but there are a few changes. For one, rather than for every 16 steps, one successful steps counts as a point. Also, instead of after every 16 steps, the tempo of the pendulum will change every 32 steps.

| | A Musical Term |
| | | Mr. Upbeat is featured in a "Read Something" Gift in Rhythm Heaven Fever. It is the 22nd text gift, entitled "A Musical Term". It is unlocked by perfecting Karate Man 2. |
| Once you get to 130 points (and every so often after that), Mr. Upbeat's light will grow over the next few steps, display a series of letters, and then go back to normal. The letters that pop up spell MATCH, which can be inserted into the Police Call Rhythm Toy.
| | ==Trivia== |
| | | * Mr. Upbeat appears in the American / European versions of Rhythm Heaven Fever, but it does not appear in the Japanese version. It was added in by the localization team as a substitute for Manzai Birds, which was deemed too difficult to localize a game based mostly on Japanese culture. |
| Mr. Upbeat also has parts in the Endless Remix, replacing the Manzai Birds parts from the Japanese version.

| The reading material starts with Mr. Upbeat himself apparently talking to a therapist about his problems. He states that his name doesn't actually reflect his personality. He thinks that "Mr. Upbeat" makes people think that he should be a happy person, when he's actually usually depressed. He then apologizes to his therapist for having to come in every week to discuss this, and asks him if he ever has problems like this. The only response is an "Oookii oook-ook!" sound that normally comes from a Monkey Watch, suggesting that Mr. Upbeat is using it to help console himself. After that, Mr. Upbeat decides to end the session, stating to "turn in next week for another session of 'Mr. Upbeat's complaints'.
