Unused Content
There are various unused sprites and animations:
- "bg": a simple small black rectangle as a placeholder for the background.
- "chameleon_top_beat", "chameleon_top_attack", "chameleon_top_attack_just" and "chameleon_top_swallow": simple small black rectangles serving as placeholders for the Chameleon shown from a top-down perspective. Although not used here, the sprite sheet does contain parts to construct the Chameleon from this perspective. This set is missing the equivalent of "chameleon_side_beat_happy" and "chameleon_side_beat_sad", which are the Chameleon's facial expressions reacting to the player's rhythm.
- "yeah" is an animation consisting of a simple small black rectangle.
- "bg_test": a black rectangle serving as a placeholder background.
- "_my_ship_beat" and "my_ship_laser": use the red number 1 as a placeholder.
- "_laser": the tongue extending outward as a single sprite, including white lines indicating movement. The used animations "tongue_mid" and "tongue_tip" have it separated into two segments instead.
- "_laser_just": a blank animation.
- "_tongue": a smaller version of "_laser".
- "_tongue_just": a slower version of "_tongue".
- "_chameleon_side_swallow": an alternate animation of the Chameleon swallowing a bug. It is left grayscale here.
A couple of the animations above suggest this game originally included a ship that shoots lasers of some kind, thematically similar to Shoot-'em-up. To that end, there are also unused sprites of the Chameleon with its mouth open, and the piece that would attach the tongue to its mouth moving in an unnatural manner. The second frame of these also colors the Chameleon fully white, much like the Blastronaut in Shoot-'em-up while shooting a laser. These sprites can be found after all the unused placeholder squares, and before the Chameleon's used sprites. There is also an unused sprite of the Chameleon with its mouth open and a flat tongue visible, but not being lashed out.
There are even more unused sprites and animations for the bugs:
- "debug_target": a blank sprite.
- Copies of the sprites for "_tongue" and "_tongue_just" from the Chameleon's sheet.
- "bowan", "bowan_beat", "bowan_sign_00", "bowan_sign_01" and "bowan_dodge": an unused version of the red bugs (whose names are prefixed with "feint"). It has a gray glow around it rather than red.
- "arman_sleep", "arman_sign_00", "arman_sign_01", "arman_damage_00", "arman_damage_01", "arman_damage_02", "arman_dodge" and "arman_hit": an unused darker version of the yellow bugs (whose names are prefixed with "enemy"). It may have attacked the player rather than simply dodging. It has a gray glow around it rather than yellow.
- Copies of the sprites for "bg_test" and the placeholder black square. Two sprites show the red bug being attached to the unused flat tongue, with the placeholder black squares.
- A large dark green background with lighter spots, as well as a variation that's just the spots. This background is still smaller than the used one, which in turn has larger gaps between the spots and is purple in color.
The background has the following unused sprites and animations:
- "bg_shadow": an animation with five frames, the first being a large black square, the other four being blank. The sprite for this is actually a dark grey, but modified to be black in the animation.
- "CellAnim0": a cyan circle expanding before disappearing.
- "CellAnim1": a blank animation. It uses the red number 1 as its sprite, with the opacity set to 0. This same sprite is used in the "offset" animation.
