After talking to the development staff of Rhythm Heaven, I felt that I wouldn't be able to get a true picture of the development background unless I heard it directly from Tsunku-san, so I asked you to join us. !style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|わかりました。<br>ま、ぼくも、けっこうゲームが好きで、<br>いろんなゲームをやらせていただいたんです。<br>いわゆる「音ゲー」というものが流行りましたよね。<br>音楽に合わせて、ボタンを押していくという。<br>ぼくもいくつかやってみたんですけど、<br>音楽をやっている立場からすると、<br>どうもフラストレーションを感じるんです。<br>「ここがボタンを押すところ？」という感じで。<br>つまり、あれは、リズムにのるというよりも、<br>けっきょく、目押しをしてるんですよね。

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|Of course. Well, I like games quite a bit, and I've played a lot of different games. So-called "rhythm games" were very popular, weren't they? You press buttons in time with the music. I've tried a few of them, but from a musician's perspective, I find them frustrating. I felt like, "Is this the place to press a button?" In other words, rather than following the rhythm, you end up pressing buttons by eye.

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|That's right. So that's why you felt that so-called "rhythm games" are just about looking at the music, matching the score, and pressing buttons at the specified times, and not the rhythm.

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|そうなんですよ。音、関係ないんですよね。<br>そんなふうに、当時は感じてまして、<br>でも、まぁ、そんなことをね、いちいち、<br>ぼくらが言ってもしゃあないというか、<br>こういうもんなんやなということで<br>そのときは終わってたんです。<br>で、数年前になりますけど、任天堂さんから<br>『ドンキーコンガ』というゲームが出て、<br>ぼくの楽曲をたくさん使っていただいたこともあって<br>サンプルを送っていただいたんですね。<br>それで、家でそれをやってみたときに、<br>「あれ？　ここはこうじゃないんじゃないかな」と。<br>で、その夜に、最初の企画書みたいなものを<br>バーッと書きはじめたんです。<br>これはなんか伝えなあかん、という気がして。<br>ゲームをつくってる人たちになにか伝えないと、<br>ぼくにとっても、世間にとっても、<br>「音ゲー」というものが<br>曲がっていくような気がしたんです。<br>で、書き上げたんですけど、<br>それをどうするかというのは<br>はっきりとは決めてなかったんです。<br>うちの社員たちに話したんですけど、<br>「いや、ゲームつくるなんて無理ですよ」<br>「何曲つくらなきゃいけないと思ってるんですか」<br>みたいな反応ばっかりで、軽く説教されて（笑）。

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|That's right. It has nothing to do with the sound. At the time, I felt that way, but I thought that there was nothing we could say about it, or that it was just the way things were. Then, a few years ago, Nintendo released a game called Donkey Konga, and they used a lot of my music, so they sent me samples. When I played it at home, I thought, "Huh? This isn't right." So that night, I started writing my first proposal in a flash. I felt like I had to communicate something about this to the people who make games, otherwise the idea of "rhythm games" would be distorted, both for me and for the public.<br><br>So, I wrote it up, but I hadn't decided exactly what to do with it. I told my employees, but they just responded with things like, "No, it's impossible to make a game," and "How many songs do you think you have to make?", and I was given a light lecture. (laughs)

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|当時、いくつか、つき合いのある<br>ソフトメーカーさんはあったんです。<br>社員は、とりあえず、そこへ相談してみる、<br>ということを考えていたみたいなんですけど、<br>ぼくとしては、もう、<br>「ダメもとでいいから、任天堂に送ってくれ」と。<br>それは、なんていうかな、<br>ソフトをつくる会社じゃなくて、<br>「遊びそのもの」をつくる会社じゃないと<br>ダメだと思ったんです。<br>それで企画書を任天堂さんに送って、<br>それがそもそものきっかけですね。

The employees seemed to think that we should consult with them for the time being, but I said to them, "Just send it to Nintendo, even if it's a dead end." I felt we needed a company that creates "fun itself," not just software. So we sent the proposal to Nintendo, and that was the beginning.

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|私はその話を聞いて、<br>つんく♂さんの考えをもっと知りたい、<br>と思ったんですね。<br>で、やりとりをするなかで、あらためて<br>つんく♂さんからメッセージをいただいて<br>「ああ、これだけはっきりと<br>やりたいことがおありなんだな」と<br>はじめて理解できたんです。<br>やっぱり、私たちにも最初はわからなかったんですよ。<br>音楽をされている方のなかで<br>ゲームをつくってみたいという人は、<br>まあ、少なからずいらっしゃるわけで、<br>「自分のつくってる音楽の出口が増えればいい」<br>と思ってらっしゃる方から、<br>「とにかくゲームをつくりたい」という人まで、<br>ダイナミックレンジがとっても広いんです。<br>そんななかで、つんく♂さんは、<br>「日本人のリズム感って、やりようによっては<br>もっともっとよくできる」という<br>ある意味、ダイナミックレンジを<br>振り切ったようなところから考えておられて、<br>その視点と、真剣さが、私にとっては驚きでした。<br>それで、どうなるのかは、わからないけれど、<br>とにかく真剣に向き合って話してみようと。

Then, in the course of our exchanges, I received a message from you again and finally understood "Oh, so you have a very clear idea of what you want to do." Of course, we didn't understand at first either. There are quite a few musicians who want to make games, and the dynamic range is very wide, from those who think, "I just want more outlets for my music," to those who say, "I just want to make games." In that context, Tsunku-san was thinking from a place that, in a sense, swung the dynamic range away, saying, "Japanese sense of rhythm can be improved even more if you do it in the right way," and I was surprised by his perspective and seriousness. So, although I didn't know how it would turn out, I decided to talk to you seriously anyway.

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|つんく♂さんは、ダメもとでアプローチしたと<br>おっしゃってましたけど、<br>思いのほか、扉は簡単に開いたな<br>という印象だったんでしょうか。

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|You said that you approached us without really thinking it would work out, but did you get the impression that the door opened more easily than you had expected?

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|そうですね。<br>話をちゃんと聞いてくださったのが、<br>いい意味で予想外だったというか、<br>たんに「こういうゲームはどうですか」みたいな<br>話にならないのがありがたかったです。<br>当時の「音ゲー」に対するフラストレーションと、<br>リズムに対するぼくの思いというのを<br>きちんと聞いていただけましたから。<br>あの、いろんなゲーム会社さんから、<br>「いっしょにゲームつくりませんか？」っていう<br>オファーはたくさんくるんですよ。<br>で、いちばんよくあるパターンは、<br>「バーチャルな世界で、<br>プレイヤーがプロデューサーになって<br>女の子のアイドルたちを育てていきます」<br>みたいな企画で、それはまぁ、<br>モーニング娘。のヒットなんかがあるから、<br>わからないわけじゃないんですけど、<br>なんとなく、乗り気じゃなくて、<br>いくつも断ってたんですよ。

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|That's right. In a good way, I was surprised that they heard me out, and I was grateful that they didn't just say "How about this kind of game?" They listened to my frustration with "rhythm games" at the time and my thoughts about rhythm. I get a lot of offers from various game companies saying "Would you like to make a game together?" The most common pattern is something like "In a virtual world, the player becomes a producer and develops female idols." I was not unaware of such projects because of the success of Morning Musume, but I was not so keen on it and had turned down a number of proposals.

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|ま、それはべつに、<br>ぼくがいなくてもつくれるというか。<br>単にぼくの名前とモーニング娘。の設定だけが<br>欲しいんじゃないかなと思って。<br>だから、たぶん、それをつくったとしても、<br>キャラクターだけがかわいい、みたいな<br>雰囲気だけのゲームになりそうで、<br>それはぼくがつくりたいものじゃないと思ったんです。<br>その点、任天堂の方たちは、最初から、<br>「どういうゲームをつくりたいんですか？」という<br>きちんとした聞き手になってくれたんで、<br>うれしかったですね。

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|Well, it's not like they could make it without me. I thought they just wanted my name and that of Morning Musume. So, even if I made it, it would probably just be a game with a cute character and atmosphere, and I didn't think that was what I wanted to make. In that respect, the people at Nintendo were good listeners from the very beginning, asking me, "What kind of game do you want to make?", so I was happy.

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|Incidentally, when we were approached about this project, we decided to give it to the team behind the WarioWare series. What were your first impressions of the people from Nintendo who visited you, Tsunku-san?

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|ええと、もっとゲーム開発者っぽいというか、<br>技術屋さんみたいな人が来るかと思ったんですけど<br>そうでもなかったというか（笑）。<br>あとは、いきなり契約書というか誓約書というか<br>そういう書類を持ち出されるわけでもなく。

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|ええ、そうです。<br>「開発するまで口外しないでください」<br>みたいなことをいきなり言われるのかな<br>と思ってたんですけど、そういうこともなく。<br>ま、やっぱり、いちばんうれしいかったのは<br>「関西弁で話し合いができた」ということですね！

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|Exactly. I was expecting them to suddenly say something like "Don't tell anyone until it's developed," but that didn't happen. What I liked the most was that we were able to discuss things casually in the Kansai dialect!

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|東京の、うちの小さいオフィスで、夏の暑い日に、<br>「クーラー直接当たると寒いな」<br>「消すと暑いな」「当たると寒いな」言いながら、<br>関西弁でお話できたのは、よかったです。<br>音楽に詳しい人も何人かいらっしゃって、<br>突っ込んだ話ができたのもよかったな。<br>あ、それから、あのころ、ぼくはたまたま<br>『メイド イン ワリオ』にハマってたので、<br>その『ワリオ』のチームが動いてくださったのも<br>話が盛り上がるきっかけになりましたね。

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|It was nice to be able to talk casually in Kansai dialect on a hot summer day in our small office in Tokyo, saying things like, "It's cold when the air conditioner is blowing into you directly," "It's hot when you turn it off," "It's cold when it's on." There were also a few people there who were knowledgeable about music, so it was nice to be able to talk about it in-depth. Oh, and I happened to be really into WarioWare at the time, so having the Wario team involved was also a great opportunity to get the conversation going on that.

After returning from Tokyo, they had-and I'm reluctant to describe them with these words-a "twinkle in their eyes", saying they were glad to have heard what Tsunku-san had to say. (laughs)

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|『リズム天国』、<br>あるいは『リズム天国ゴールド』において<br>つんく♂さんが強く打ち出してらっしゃった<br>コンセプトというのは<br>「リズム感は鍛えられる」というものでした。<br>そのあたりについて、教えていただけますか。

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|The concept that Tsunku-san emphasized in Rhythm Tengoku and Rhythm Heaven was that "your sense of rhythm can be trained." Could you tell us more about that?

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|そうですね、たとえば、<br>「英語がしゃべれない」というのは、<br>日本人が抱きがちなコンプレックスですよね。<br>それと同じように、「踊れない」とか、<br>「リズムにのれない」というのもあると思うんです。<br>で、これは、いつもぼくが思うことなんですけど、<br>いまからネイティブな英語を<br>しゃべるのは無理かもしれないけど、<br>鍛えればある程度までは<br>たどり着けるんじゃないかと。<br>とくに、リズムに関しては、<br>鍛えればある程度の領域には、<br>全員、行けるんじゃないかなと思うんです。

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|Yes, for example, "I can't speak English" is a complex that Japanese people tend to have. Similarly, "I can't dance" and "I can't keep up with the rhythm" are also common. I always think that it may be impossible to speak native English now, but you can reach a certain level if you work on it. Especially when it comes to rhythm, I think everyone can reach a certain level if they train.

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|Is that something you became very certain about while giving lessons to the members of Morning Musume?

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|That's right. At first, nobody could do it at all, but they all eventually learned to dance.

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|つまり、つんく♂さんには、<br>「リズム感は鍛えられる」ということについては<br>すでに実績があるわけですね。

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|In other words, you already had a track record of proving that a sense of rhythm can be trained.

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|そうですね。ぼくのなかでは証拠も実績もある。<br>歌のピッチをよくするよりも、<br>リズム感をよくするほうがよっぽど簡単です。<br>ですから、若い子だけではなく、<br>おじさんやおばちゃんも含めて、<br>「英会話でも習ってみようか」<br>という気持ちと同じくらいの感覚で、<br>リズム感を鍛えてもらえればなと。

It's much easier to improve your sense of rhythm than to improve the pitch of your singing. So I hope that not only young people, but also older men and women will train their sense of rhythm with the same feeling as if they were thinking, "Let's try learning English conversation."

Essentially, "music without sheet music" is passed on in this way, by memorizing the whole thing and imitating it. Japanese gagaku, dance, and folk songs also have simple musical scores, but basically you memorize the whole thing when your teacher says "♪ Chiton shyan to shaan." It's the same as when a child learns words, isn't it? And, it is not easy to be asked to "teach" such things that are to be memorized in their entirety.

!style="width:40%" align="left" valign="top"|昔、ぼくが「太陽とシスコムーン」という<br>４人組のグループをつくったとき、<br>メンバーのひとりに<br>体操の元オリンピック選手がいたんですよ。<br>その子に歌や踊りの基礎を教えてるとき、<br>ぼくは彼女にこう言ったことがあるんです。<br>「たとえば何度も何度も反復練習して、<br>999回目までは、できなかったのに<br>1000回目でポーンと急に<br>できるようになることがあるやろ？<br>それと同じで、歌もリズムも、<br>何回も何回も練習してたら、<br>いつかできるようになるときがくる」と。<br>とくに彼女は厳しい練習をずっとやってきた<br>オリンピック選手でしたから、<br>「そういう経験、あったやろ？」と<br>ぼくは言ったんですけど、ぜんぜん通じなくて、<br>むしろ、ポカーンとしてるんですよ。<br>「あったやろ、体操とか、練習して、練習して、<br>やっとできるようになった技とか、<br>何回転宙返りみたいなこと、あったやろ？」<br>って言ったら、彼女は不思議そうに<br>「私、３、４回でできるんですよ」って言ったんです。

So if you can't be sure that this is the right path, you won't be able to move forward. In particular, with this game, it's structured in such a way that the frills are stripped away and only the most important parts remain, so you can't cheat, and if you become anxious, you really can't see the future. If you're not sure, your energy runs out, or you discharge, so to speak. When people who have discharged and become anxious in this way go to Tsunku-san's place and come back, they're like, "Wow, I've recharged," and they come back with a smile on their face.

We'd get halfway through, but then at the last minute we'd decide to scrap it. So I really was able to interact with the people at Nintendo with the same feeling I have when I'm usually working as a producer. I did say some pretty harsh things to them, too. I honestly told them things like, "Aren't you getting complacent?" or "Aren't you just having fun with the pictures?" But there was no one who said, "In that case, Tsunku-san, please do it yourself." (laughs)
